Doppler scan

Doppler scan uses ultrasound to measure blood flow in vessels and detect blockages or clots.

Doppler scan

A Doppler scan, also known as a Doppler ultrasound, is a non-invasive diagnostic test that uses high-frequency sound waves to assess the flow of blood through blood vessels. Unlike a regular ultrasound that only shows images, the Doppler scan can also detect the direction and speed of blood flow.

This test is essential in evaluating circulatory health, detecting blood clots, arterial blockages, narrowing (stenosis), or reduced blood supply to organs or limbs.

🔹

How It Works:

  • A handheld device called a transducer is moved over the target area.

  • It sends and receives sound waves that bounce off moving red blood cells.

  • The changes in wave frequency (Doppler effect) are analyzed to show how fast and in which direction blood is flowing.

  • The result is a color-coded image or waveform showing blood flow patterns.

🔹

Types of Doppler Scans:

  1. Color Doppler: Visualizes flow in color to detect abnormalities.

  2. Spectral Doppler: Graphs flow velocity over time.

  3. Power Doppler: Detects very slow or small blood flow.

  4. Duplex Doppler: Combines traditional ultrasound with Doppler imaging.

🔹

Common Uses:

  • Pregnancy: Check blood flow to the placenta and fetus.

  • Leg veins/arteries: Identify deep vein thrombosis (DVT) or varicose veins.

  • Carotid arteries: Evaluate blood flow to the brain (stroke risk).

  • Heart: Check for valve defects or reduced heart function.

  • Kidneys and liver: Assess organ blood supply.

🔹

Procedure:

  • Completely safe, painless, and radiation-free.

  • No fasting required (except in some abdominal scans).

  • Duration: usually 20–45 minutes depending on the area examined.

  • Conducted in outpatient settings with no downtime.

🔹

Benefits:

  • Detects vascular issues early

  • Safe during pregnancy

  • Helps prevent strokes, organ damage, and blood clots

  • Supports real-time monitoring during procedures

A Doppler scan is a powerful, non-invasive tool for diagnosing and managing conditions related to blood flow and vascular health, playing a critical role in both preventive care and emergency diagnosis.
