RGU/MCU/RGU+MCU

RGU, MCU, and RGU+MCU are imaging tests that evaluate the urethra and bladder function using contrast X-rays to detect urinary tract issues.

RGU/MCU/RGU+MCU

RGU (Retrograde Urethrogram) and MCU (Micturating Cystourethrogram) are radiological investigations performed to assess the urethra, urinary bladder, and urine flow dynamics, especially in patients with symptoms like difficulty urinating, recurrent urinary infections, trauma, or suspected structural abnormalities.

  • RGU (Retrograde Urethrogram):This test involves injecting a contrast dye into the urethra and taking X-ray images to visualize the anterior urethra. It helps diagnose urethral strictures, blockages, injuries, or abnormal passages (fistulas). It is commonly used in males for evaluating trauma-related or chronic narrowing of the urethra.

  • MCU (Micturating Cystourethrogram):In this test, the bladder is filled with contrast material through a catheter. X-ray images are taken while the patient urinates to assess the bladder’s function, reflux (backflow of urine into the kidneys), and posterior urethra. It is especially helpful in diagnosing vesicoureteral reflux, neurogenic bladder, or urethral valves in children.

  • RGU + MCU (Combined Study):Performing both tests together gives a comprehensive view of the entire urethra and bladder, helping in accurate diagnosis of complex urinary tract conditions. It is often used in cases of trauma, stricture disease, or post-surgical evaluation.

These procedures are minimally invasive, done under fluoroscopy (live X-ray), and may involve mild discomfort but are generally safe when performed by experienced professionals.
