Kidney Function Tests

Kidney Function Tests (KFTs) are blood and urine tests that assess how well your kidneys are working. They measure waste products like creatinine, urea, and electrolytes to detect kidney damage, dehydration, or chronic kidney disease (CKD).

Kidney Function Tests

Kidney Function Tests (KFTs) are a group of tests that evaluate how efficiently your kidneys are filtering waste, balancing fluids, and regulating essential minerals and electrolytes in the body. These tests are crucial for detecting early signs of kidney dysfunction, especially in patients with diabetes, high blood pressure, or a family history of kidney disease.

The kidneys are responsible for removing waste products and excess substances from the blood through urine. Any damage or reduced function can lead to the accumulation of toxins, which can seriously affect health.

🔹

Key Parameters in KFTs:

  1. Serum Creatinine
Waste product from muscle metabolism; elevated levels indicate reduced kidney filtration.

  2. Blood Urea Nitrogen (BUN) / Urea
Byproduct of protein metabolism; high levels suggest poor kidney function or dehydration.

  3. Estimated Glomerular Filtration Rate (eGFR)
A calculation based on creatinine levels, age, sex, and race to estimate kidney filtering capacity.

  4. Uric Acid
Elevated levels may lead to gout or indicate kidney inefficiency.

  5. Electrolytes (Sodium, Potassium, Chloride, Bicarbonate)
Important for fluid balance, nerve function, and heart health; imbalance indicates kidney issues.

  6. Calcium & Phosphorus
Monitored in chronic kidney disease, as imbalances are common.

  7. Urinalysis / Urine Albumin
Detects protein leakage (proteinuria), blood, or other abnormalities in urine, often early signs of kidney damage.

🔹

Why KFTs Are Done:

  • Diagnose or monitor kidney diseases

  • Detect acute kidney injury or chronic kidney disease (CKD)

  • Monitor effects of medications that affect the kidneys

  • Evaluate symptoms like swelling, fatigue, frequent urination, or high blood pressure

  • Regular screening for patients with diabetes or hypertension

🔹

Test Procedure:

  • Involves blood sample and sometimes urine sample

  • Fasting may or may not be required depending on test panel

  • Results typically available in a few hours to one day

🔹

Advantages:

  • Detects kidney issues early before symptoms appear

  • Helps prevent progression to kidney failure

  • Guides treatment plans for related conditions

The Kidney Function Test (KFT) panel is essential for monitoring renal health, particularly for those at risk. Regular testing can help maintain optimal function and prevent long-term complications.
